Sergey Martynov

(b. 1989, Russia)

Glass artist and founder of the art glass studio FRESH.GLASS. Glassblowing tutor at the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Design and Applied Arts (Stroganov Academy), 2016-2020.

Sergey Martynov explores a unique way of glass work, creating kiln cast glass. His experimental practice studies the various «natures» of glass and its integration into a variety of contexts, from complex artistic statements to applied architectural projects.

Martynov often speaks of his work with glass as a competition – the technically complex method of glass casting allows the material to be a full participant in the creation process, sometimes whimsical and self-willed. At the core of the artist's practice is the exploration, the observation of the material's behavior in manufacturing and in application. In architecture, where glass interacts with nature, landscape and urban context. In interior design, where glass is human-scale and opens up to close tactile interaction. In art projects where glass becomes the language of expression of the author's thoughts, feelings and reflections.
